Roly Tells His Story

Roly Tells His Story

The True Adventures Of Rover Glenradin
The Small Dogs From Africa – Book One
________________________________________________________________________________

“They say we dogs are telepathic. I don’t know anything about that but one day, how wonderful, Sylvia came to visit my family in Africa and I knew right away that I would be able to tell her my stories. So I did! And here they are!”
Roly and his friends live in a small and often eccentric community in a remote part of Central Africa, a world filled with wild animals, from crocodiles to cheetah, from lions to warthogs. They survive by working together, a group of quite disparate dog friends. Roly speaks simply and with remarkable understanding and empathy, stories for younger readers and the adults who read with them – illustrated by the legendary Takashi Masunaga and the talented Colombian artist Daniel Arce-Lopez
#
When he was an old dog, Roly asked my mother to write down the stories of his life. He was a wire haired terrier who was born and adventured in a remote area of Zambia. Their adventures went far beyond the wilds because they lived in a small and often eccentric community. Black Africans. White Africans. And the leftovers of the former colonial regime. With the exception of one or two of these leftovers, everyone – dogs and humans – loved their lives and their homes and these stories are filled with humour and affection.

Fishing for Crocodiles III

Fact and fiction in Southern Central Africa: in 1963/4, with Northern Rhodesia on the verge of Independence, two African boys, one Black and one white, set out to make an impossible cross country pilgrimage from Barotseland to Lourenço Marques, home of Southern Africa’s greatest rock ’n roll radio station.

3rd edition

“I first wrote this book many years ago, too fast and too carelessly and in an unsettled state of mind. A few years later, I edited it to correct some historical and musical references. Now, in 2025, I look at the material in a different light and while a great deal of the original stands, I have made a lot of changes, expanding the fact and cutting down on the fiction. “ P.L.

Reviews from Amazon

Highly recommended. This is a perceptive, beautifully-written memoir about a colonial childhood that throws a light on a place – Africa – and time – the sixties – that now seem both exotic and impossibly distanced…. In turns funny, terrifying, exciting and touching, Fishing for Crocodiles is a rollicking adventure that would make a great indie movie. Highly recommended.

Charming, vivid and poignant. This charming, vivid and poignant tale is set in such a time, before the African dive into the waters of the 20th century became such a mighty struggle for survival. Growing up in Africa, as this author apparently did, has enabled him to describe in detail the simpler time and self-reliant life style that has long disappeared from almost all parts of the globe. A simple and sincere relationship with his African playmate, a naive expectation that leads to an incredible journey across a still wild continent that leads to an entirely unexpected and dangerous encounter, all add up to a touching tale of remembrance and, finally, of redemption.

A must read. In the vogue of realistic African story writing made popular by Alexandra Fuller, this is a must read for all who are drawn to the now enlightening continent.

The 1960’s. Central Africa. The Winds of Change, sweeping down through one of the last great wildernesses on planet earth. Landilane, Black, and Rex, White, not yet teenagers, run away from their home in a remote corner of Northern Rhodesia, on the eve of Zambian Independence, 1964.

Their quest: to meet their idol Sam Cooke who, by all accounts, is to be interviewed on Southern Africa’s primo rock station, LM Radio. Cooke’s iconic song, ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’, has a strange power over them. Their destination: Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), capital city of Mozambique, nestled comfortably on the warm, welcoming shores of the Indian Ocean. They’ll journey down the mighty Zambezi River, through remote and game-filled bundhu, train hopping through neighbouring Southern Rhodesia, into Mozambique and into the hands of the mythical freedom-fighter, Alice N’Karta, fighting for her people’s independence from Portuguese colonial rule.

The journey will force them to confront and come to terms with their ethnic and cultural differences, putting their friendship to a critical stress-test, imposing, unwillingly, a 50 year hiatus to their profound connection. Little do they know that their idol will be shot to death in a Los Angeles motel room before they even arrive in LM.

Nothing will ever be the same.

SHANDY TELLS HER STORY

The True Adventures Of Shady Smoothflow Of Coneve
Two Small Dogs From Africa – Book Two

———–

When the world is a quite different place, a small dog adventures in Central Africa and then travels to England where she has a whole new life. Many years later she sits down to tell her story to the human she owns – who happens to be my mother. Illustrated by the legendary Takashi Masunaga and the talented Colombian artist Daniel Arce-Lopez these more or less true stories are told in Shandy’s own words. Stories for young readers and the adults who read with them.

Shandy was a wire haired terrier who was born and adventured in Zambia before she made the long and difficult transition to England. Where her brother Roly’s adventures involved many dog friends, Shandy’s were more focused on her family and the two very special dogs in her life: the tragic Great Dane Emerson and the indomitable rescue dog Mungo.

Toward the end of her long and varied life, Shandy asked my mother Sylvia Lawrence to write her biography. It wasn’t that she could speak like some cartoon dog. It was that my mother could understand exactly what she was saying. As Shandy herself put it “Some of us really do understand more or less exactly what humans are saying, and I’m one of those lucky ones. The problem is that even those of us who understand human talk can’t actually talk back. So that’s where telepathy comes in. That’s how you understand me and how you can tell my story; but you’ll need to explain this to the humans who read it because otherwise they won’t believe this is really me!”

Flash Chord

I loved it

It’s the early sixties, just before England starts to swing. Aspiring musician Paul finds himself out of a job when the singer in the rock’n’roll band in which he plays organ drops dead on stage. Meanwhile, beautiful seventeen-year-old Suzie, escaping her abusive father, decides to quit the sticks and head to the bright lights of London. Flash Chord tells the story of how Paul and Suzie meet and fall in and out of love, against a backdrop of the clubs, bars and strip joints of London’s Soho. Packed with memorable characters, in turns funny, touching and gritty, Flash Chord is an evocative tale of love stripped bare.

Amazon reviews

A cool and intimate story about the dodgy and dangerous underworld of early ’60s English strip clubs, used car hustling and the simmering, about-to-explode pop music scene in London and Hamburg as the transition from blues to Beatles takes place. Follows the paths of a stunning but too-young actress/model/stripper/escort and her on-again off-again struggling musician boyfriend as they bounce off their adopted “family” at a fancy strip club. Charming car thieves, underworld characters with a capital C and scamming band managers abound. The details convinced me the author was there. I loved it.

Poseidon Cooks!

Once upon a time, I lived on a sailboat in California. One of the highlights of that life was meeting John and Linda Andreotti. Different, charming, generous, funny. She a stellar cook and he a perceptive and hugely knowledgeable oenophile. After many wonderful meals aboard their 70ft powerboat Poseidon, I suggested we put together a cooking show based on the boat and the unique Channel Islands of Southern California. The ups and downs of that project I have described elsewhere but this book was one of the first endeavors.

It describes ten of Linda Andreotti’s favorite menus – some 40 recipes in all. Each menu is associated with a different island, anchorage or harbor as MV Poseidon carries out its mission – voyaging to cook! 10 Favourite Menus follows in the great tradition of story-telling cooks like Elizabeth David, Jacques Pepin and Anthony Bourdain.

Amazon reviews

Packed with delicious recipes. What an incredible value! This little book is packed with delicious recipes and cook/writer Linda Andreotti's instructions are clear and easy to follow. I love her gentle insistence on organic and local foods wherever possible… For me personally, the bonus was the local color, the stories about the islands and harbors that Linda's boat visits. "Ten Favorite Menus..." may persuade me to make the journey across the Santa Barbara Channel. It's certainly persuaded me to make every one of these wonderful meals.

So fun to read. 10 Favourite Menus is such a great cookbook!!! I can absolutely smell the olive oil and fresh garlic, not to mention the sea!... Delightfully fresh and easy recipes and so fun to read! It'll make you want to hop the first plane to CA, then...the nearest yacht and grill, and grill and grill. Oh...and maybe sip down a few, glasses of delicious California Vino too!

Full of excitement and love. Any recipe that comes from Linda Andreotti is already a favorite in my opinion. The book is full of fun, excitement, and love..... love for food, friendship, and the art of sharing good times… This journal of recipes, stories, and pictures is a perfect introduction to what I hope will be more books of recipes to come from Linda and John Andreotti.

Fun and not too difficult to make. This isn't a huge book but, unlike some, most of the recipes in it sound (a) as if they'll be fun and not too difficult to make and (b) as if the end result will be worth the effort. Majoring on light, fresh dishes - Mexican-Cali, lots of sea food…  Recommended.

I would highly recommend this book. Linda's recipes are stellar and would certainly delight any chef. She is also great at explaining the process so that someone like me (not a chef) would be able to duplicate her results. I appreciated being able to travel to the different anchorages along the way.

Full Moon

The Amazing Rock ‘n Roll Life Of Keith Moon

The most candid insight into the Who star’s lifeDaily Star

Written in a wonderful fast, racy style, Runyonesque and full of good jokesGirl About Town

A welcome change from the usual bland rock book reportage… Butler clearly has a deep and lasting affection for Moon. Andy Gill, NME

Certainly outrageous, sometimes funny, but mostly a sad account of life with a talented neurotic. Daily Mirror

In 1967 Peter ‘Dougal’ Butler became a roadie for The Who and their mercurial genius drummer Keith Moon. Soon he would be Moon’s personal assistant, chauffeur, and all-purpose wingman. The ride lasted a tumultuous ten years, ending just prior to Moon’s untimely death in 1978. Full Moon is Butler’s memoir of that ride: essential reading for Who fans, and a masterclass in the mayhem caused by rock ‘n’ roll excess.

Chris and I wrote Full Moon based on a series of interviews with Butler. We’re proud of the work we did to bring life to what otherwise might have been a mundane account, no matter how wild the events. Among other things we coopted Damon Runyon’s first person, present tense slang-filled style. Butler did, of course, provide all the source material. The cooperation has resulted in a very successful book.

Some Amazon reviews:

The stories that that the author tells in this book are so funny I laughed so hard tears ran down my face & my stomach ached. Who fans will love this book. Check out the glossary of British slang.

Love this book and so well written by one of the very few people in the world who really new Keith Moon. I hope Dougal Butler will keep writing more books. I really wish every Moon fan will read this book.

I wish this book was longer! I couldn’t stop reading this book! It was hilarious and it gave an upfront and personal look at Keith Moon from the man who basically took care of him for 10 years. Great book, Peter!!

(PL observation. As far as I know Butler has not written anything else.)

The Mao Tse Tung Workers Revolutionary Striptease Emporium

See the WARNING for The London Chronicles compendium, of which this is one book.

If you’ve ever wondered whether the sayings of Chairman Mao could be enacted by a platoon of strippers dancing to the tune of ‘Climb Every Mountain’, this is the book for you. THE MAO TSE TUNG WORKERS REVOLUTIONARY STRIPTEASE EMPORIUM is the sequel to Peter Lawrence and Chris Trengove’s successful Soho novel IT’S YOUR MONEY IN MY POCKET, DEAR, NOT MINE IN YOURS and the third book in their ‘London Chronicles’ series. As the Manchester Evening News said about IT’S YOUR MONEY, it is not for puritan readers. The Times said about MONEY, It’s ‘a book defying classification. (For other reviews see The London Chronicles on this site.)

Set in 1974, it follows directly on from UP THE PICTURES (the re-released, re-titled ENGULFED IN A TIDE OF FILTH) and takes up the story of Le Can-Can strip club after former stage manager Jeff returns to his duties having failed to make it as a photographer. Soon after he returns, the club’s fearsome owner Enrico retires to champion ramblers’ rights in the Cotswolds, and aging choreographer Honor decides to throw in her lot with her wealthy boyfriend, leaving the club heading steadily for the rocks.

The answer? A workers’ buy-out, bankrolled by unlikely financier Chan, the club’s irascible Chinese carpenter, who has amassed a fortune by eating nothing but boiled rice for twenty years. Needless to say, it’s never going to be plain sailing for a business run by a co-operative of strippers, headed up by a swivel-eyed Maoist with anger management and linguistic problems.

Riotous farce, surreal filth, touching romance and dodgy dealings, this time with added murder and mayhem.

The London Chronicles

Well-observed and often funny. (Sunday Times)

Very funny without ever being contemptuous. (The Times.)

Outrageously and wickedly honest. Full of finger-lickin’ good digs at distasteful modern horrors.  (Men Only)

It’s very unlikely, almost like a fantasy, but very funny. (Amazon)

An absolute joy! (Amazon)

WARNING!

The three novels that comprise The London Chronicles – and particularly the first two – were written in a different space-time continuum when readers and the general public were rhinoceros-skinned and the general rule was ‘if it’s funny, fuckit – let it fly.’ Many readers may be offended by this material and if you are prone to outrage, apoplexy or heart attack please, please do not read The London Chronicles.

This book is a compendium of three comic novels previously published separately.

IT’S YOUR MONEY IN MY POCKET, DEAR, NOT MINE IN YOURS is a hilarious and raucous expose of life in a Soho strip cub in the early seventies, originally published by the very courageous Quartet Books (though we note we are not featured in the current Quarter backlist! Are they ashamed?). We will forever be grateful to William Miller and John Booth, who gave us our first break. The book sold well and garnered excellent reviews.

The sequel, ENGULFED IN A TIDE OF FILTH (now known as UP THE PICTURES) was also published by Quartet and tells the story of Jeff, stage manager in the first book, who tries to make it as a photographer but instead gets caught up in the crazed machinations of various loony left and rabid right political groups – not to mention the puritanical Whitehouse-style outfit NOFUK (No Filth In The United Kingdom.

THE MAO TSE TUNG WORKERS REVOLUTIONARY STRIPTEASE EMPORIUM was written decades after IT’S YOUR MONEY, and takes up the story of Le Can-Can strip club after it’s taken over by a workers’ co-operative headed by demented hardline Communist carpenter Chan. If you’ve ever fantasized about a troupe of strippers singing the sayings of Chairman Mao to the tune of ‘Climb Every Mountain’, this is the book for you.

THE LONDON CHRONICLES is over 180,000 words of comedy gold, a must for anyone who remembers London in the seventies, a time before computers and mobile phones, before sat nav and Oyster cards, when Soho was the province of working girls and clip-joints rather than ad men and wine bars.

Blood, Fangs and Claws

Horror in triplicate!

Blood, Fangs and Claws is a 70,00 word full-length book comprising three novella-length horror stories originally published separately.

NIGHT OF THE DOGS is a terrifyingly believable tale set on a rundown estate whose residents are threatened by ruthless young gangsters until the gang’s ‘weapon dogs’ turn on their owners in a fiery and bloody climax.

LOOM: ISLAND OF TERROR tells the story of a London family moving to remote Scottish island Loom in search of a better life and finding themselves and the islanders terrorized by zombie-like cannibalistic androids.

BLOOD RANCH is based on the highly regarded screenplay – action, horror and humour in equal measure.

Blood, Fangs and Claws is old-school full-blooded horror. Nevertheless, all three stories have something to say about the frightening world we live in and are underpinned by the darkest black humour.
